It is said that human resource is the heart of every business and that it is more relevant now than it’s ever been in the past years.

Moffat Kootlhoboge is a qualified human resources professional. For him, human resources professional is not just a career but a tool and a platform which allows him to make a difference in the lives of other people. As a human resource professional, Moffat understands business, human resources strategies as well as dealing with people or structures that positively impact people lives.

EDUCATION AND GOALS

Moffat obtained his Bachelor of Art in social sciences with specialization in public administration and sociology at the university of Botswana. He continues to broaden his skills set, knowledge and information base with further studies, so he is currently studying towards a Master of Business Administration at the same university. “My interest in human resource management and leadership, coupled with a keen business acumen, has motivated me to work towards achieving my MBA at the University of Botswana to equip myself with a relevant and highly sought-after skill set,” Moffat says.

Amongst all this he is a member of the human resource professionals society-Botswana. His career has allowed him to associate with different people and work hand in hand with other professionals in shaping the society. “Since the HR Professional’s Society Botswana is a network of professionals in the field, and we all benefit from interactions with one another, I am registered with the society as an Associate Human Resources Professional. Being part of the industry’s finest thinkers has been one of my privileged moments. We play diverse roles based on our abilities, and every professional is given the opportunity to be hands-on and represent society by imparting knowledge.” Moffat reveals.

Moffat was not aware that one day he would be a human resource professional until he pursued a profession that has unlocked doors for him. “When I worked as a human resources intern during my academic attachment days, that is when my passion for the field began to grow. All the information I had learned in lectures was reinforced by the experience of the work environment I was part of. Throughout my undergraduate study years, I have always enjoyed all the human resources courses I have taken. After discovering that I related to sociology; since it dealt more with studying human behavior, social research, and human resources classes than other courses, I purposefully oriented my career toward those fields after completing my studies. I was clear about what I wanted from the onset,” he explains.

HIS DRIVING FORCE AND SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

It is such a fantastic feeling to be able to set a goal for yourself and tick it off once you have achieved it. Moffat’s driving force and source of inspiration in HR comes from pursuing a career in human reaources and learning new things while gaining experience in the industry. His love for people and an interest in making a difference in the life of other has also played a significant role in his remarkable career journey. “My interest in human resources was influenced by the interest I had in making a difference in people’s lives by being a change agent who has a hand in helping them reach their full potential.” Moffat said. “I enjoy learning something new and facing challenges along the journey because that is how we become the best in what we do,” he says.

Moffat loves what he does, and his objective is to contribute towards changing the lives of other people. He elaborated, “Changing lives has to be the most enjoyable experience I have had as an HR professional. What I enjoy most about my job is assisting others in recognizing their worth and realizing their full potential. Spending time with people with the goal of imparting knowledge, facilitating professional growth, and ultimately changing lives.”

CHALLENGES AND BREAKTHROUGHS

“My most significant breakthrough was being provided the opportunity to be a part of a team that coordinated the Progressive Institute’s annual Strategic HR Conference. Being a member of the Progressive Institute team, as well as interacting with the speakers and listening to their presentations and panel discussions, all contributed to my professional development.”

Moffat admits that his career path was not that easy, he encountered stumbling blocks. However, with a combination of hard work, dedication, and a passion for what he believes in, he managed to fulfill his dreams. “Finding my way around as a newcomer to the profession was the greatest challenge. It was difficult since at the time I was not a member of any professional body and I mostly relied on a few people for advice. Eventually, I began to cross paths with professionals and gained more knowledge through exchanges with experts. Because I place such a high value on networking, I have made it a point to constantly work to build and establish connections with other business people. The era in which HR professionals were regarded as being confined to offices and spending all of their time working on conventional HR tasks has long passed. The best strategy to promote progress and overcome obstacles through information sharing is to collaborate with others and network,” Moffat says.

ON CAREER GROWTH

What makes him unique is that he understand his role and know how to connect well with people.”A human resource practitioner needs to have a in-depth understanding of people, be empathetic toward others, and have excellent listening abilities. We need to see approachability in an HR practitioner, and I consider myself to be approachable. Everyone has a particular way of providing their knowledge in terms of services, and their values will impact this way,” he announces.

Being committed to everything he does and giving it his all has positioned him for growth. “Consistent learning and thoughtful risk-taking lead to growth. I have always been engaged either in the office, on academic pursuits, and self-learning which has enabled me to continually acquire knowledge through new information and skills through experiences. Through learning and doing, that is how one develops. The moment I finished my undergraduate studies, I already had an idea of what path to follow,” Kootlhoboge says.

ADVICE TO OTHERS

Moffat shared his best advice to people to wish follow his footsteps and says, “Processes continue to change as people evolve; therefore I would say that human resources has evolved and has grown more complex by the day. Start learning now and position yourself where you want your career path to lead because the knowledge you have today is a result of something you have learned elsewhere. Be deliberate in your career goals and concentrate on what will advance your professional development in this area.”
